How my attendance/participation will contribute to my educational experience:
At a very basic level, I am interested in reconnecting humans with the environment - finding creative ways to reconcile human action to the health of the environment. Here at Yale I am a joint masters student between the School of Epidemiology & Public Health and the School of Forestry & Environmental Science. My research focusses on the intersection between land use/land use change and the health of ecosystems and the emergence of disease in wildlife, livestock, and/or humans. Linking the health of humans to the health of the environment through disease emergence is just one way of drawing connections between human action and the environment. This conference takes a broader look at the drivers that shape urbanization (economic, social, and political). For me, the exposure to these issues will be new and incredibly informative for framing my upcoming thesis work and shaping the work that I do in the future. I particularly hope that my research linking land use to infectious disease will spark discussion on how to incorporate this information into public health outreach programs and land use planning initiatives.
Title and authors of my oral/poster proposed for conference:
Spatial Patterning of urbanization and avian influenza in Egypt, 2007-2008
