How my attendance/participation will contribute to my educational experience:
As a 1st year PhD student, I am just beginning to determine how to transform the conceptual explorations from my master's thesis into 'hard science'. While far from comprehensive, there has been much research on urban metabolism and its affect on surrounding, encompassing and supporting ecosystems; the concept of ecological design; the necessity of ecological restoration; resilience and the complexity of socio-ecological systems (M. Alberti, S.T.A. Pickett, M.L.Cadenasso, J.M. Grove, R.Noss, R. Hobbs, C.S. Holling, L. Gunderson, S. Carpenter just to name a very few). However, much of it appears to focus on measuring, explaining and predicting interactions. I am interested in the application of these ideas to concrete planning situations and to using experience to inform further research, but am not sure how to frame or carry out such research.
Several topic areas of the conference specifically address the interrelationship between knowledge and action. I hope to learn more from practitioners and policy-makers about the extent that they are integrating the above concepts into their practice, what the barriers to integration are and how research can help overcome these. I also want to gain an overview of the current state and future directions of research that contributes to our understanding coupled human-natural systems. This conference covers the spectrum of my interest in planning. Now that I have chosen an academic rather than practitioner path, I hope to build bonds with my peers and find guidance on how to focus my PhD research.
