How my attendance/participation will contribute to my educational experience:
The primary contribution to my educational experience by attending Emerging Issues 3, is the socio-ecological theme of urbanization and associated land use, which is aligned with my doctorate research interests and NSF IGERT fellowship. My research area is urbanized ecosystems within an integrated social-ecological framework, and my IGERT program (Landscape, Ecological, and Anthropogenic Processes, University of Illinois at Chicago) is focused on integrated human / natural environments.
Since this emerging research area relies upon an interdisciplinary and even transdisciplinary, approach, it has become imperative that my doctorate educational experience is integrated with other graduate students and faculty from various academic institutions. By gathering and discussing the nature of consuming and producing knowledge within a community of shared inquiry, I hope to be able to achieve the necessary intellectual understanding and capacity for successfully pursuing and formalizing my doctorate research. The Emerging Issues 3 conference especially affords an opportunity towards shared inquiry, as it includes keynote speakers that are the leaders in my area of research (Marina Alberti, Ted Gragson, Steward Pickett, Rich Pouyat, and Charles Redman), along with their associated LTER projects (Baltimore, Phoenix, and Coweta).
Title and authors of my oral/poster proposed for conference:
Urbanized Ecosystems: Proof of Concept
